When it comes to test and inspection, both 2D and 3D vision systems may be used to help improve processes and productivity in manufacturing facilities. However, while 2D vision cameras are commonly used to identify defects, 3D systems have distinct advantages for complex parts and assemblies, identifying defects much more quickly and in just about any environment.

Additionally, 3D vision systems may be combined with 2D systems to provide even more comprehensive and accurate tests and inspection of parts and assemblies.

Key Differences Between 2D and 3D Vision Systems

The key differences between 2D and 3D vision systems relate to lighting, size of work space, contrast and color, speed of operation, and of course dimensional representation.

  • Lighting 3D vision systems need very little lighting while 2D systems require a traditional lighting source
  • Work space 3D vision systems are ideal when working in tiny spaces, while 2D systems require a lot more space
  • Contrast and color 3D systems operate independently of contrast and color while 2D systems rely on these factors
  • Speed of operation 3D vision systems are perfect for inspections that must be performed in high-speed environments, while 2D systems operate at much slower speeds.
  • Dimensional representation 3D vision systems provide topographical representation of parts from which it is possible to measure 3D features including length, width, height, tilt and volume, relative to any surface. 2D systems are unable to provide a 3D representation of parts.
