Project Info

Customer Requirement:  A robotic system to pick up, orient, and present two halves of a heat shield to a riveter for joining and to offload the finished product.

Solution:  MESH designed, manufactured, and installed a customizable system that used a KUKA robot and custom end-of-arm tooling to do the following:

      • Pick up two halves of the heat shield from alignment part nests.
      • Present the heat shield parts to the riveter to clinch four rivets, forming one part.
      • Place the joined part onto an outfeed conveyor.

Productivity

  • Cycle Rate: 40 seconds.

Featured Automation

  • Industrial Robot: The KUKA KR10 R900 6-axis robot was selected for its 901.5mm reach and 10kg payload to extend to the tool nest, riveter, and outfeed conveyor and perform part rotation.
  • Riveter: This rivet setter was used to fix two halves of the shield together, forming one part.
  • Custom End-of-Arm Tooling: MESH’s vacuum-type end-of-arm tooling was constructed with lightweight aluminum and used to grip the two halves of the heat shield at once and successfully hold them in place during riveting.
  • Outfeed Conveyor: One standard 24″ belt conveyor was used to move parts out of the cell.
  • User-Friendly Operator Interface: The system was equipped with a user-friendly operator interface to ensure efficient operation and minimal training requirements.
